The Model (post 26)

What do you think about Shay's description of a model? Shay and Tally have a skewed view of our time, but what have they got right?

They are surely right about the "disease". I can tell why Tally finds it discusting. Everyone wants to be skinny, but........... when it comes to being that skinny it's ugly. Even as ugly as Shay and Tally. Tally and Shay are always critisizing themselves, and other uglies, but they now realize something just as ugly as themselves.

Lies (post 25)

Characterization of David:

  • likes Shay

  • an ugly

  • adventorous

  • kind of wierd

  • crooked smile

  • his foorhead was too high

  • handmade clothes

a picture to represent the Smoke:

I chose this picture because they said they cut down trees for a lot of the things in the town, and it also described woods surrounding the town.

Bug Eyes (post 24)

Important events in chronological order:

  1. a man gives Tally oxygen
  2. she learns about the Rangers, flowers, and helicopter
  3. they drop her off
  4. then she waits for Shay

Respond to the following quote:

".......Tally was stuck out here in the wild forever. Ugly for life. Her only away home was to betray her friend."

All Tally wanted was to be pretty, and if she wanted it as bad as it sounds, then she'll do what she has to do to achieve that goal.

Firestorm (post 23)

example of imagery:

"Billowing clouds of smoke surrounded her, blotting out the sky. A raggall of flame moved through the flowers, giving off a wave of blistering heat."

example of simile:

"Her footsteps ignited with flame as she ran through the blackened flowers, like stabbing a poker into a slumbering fire."

example of personification:

?

The Side You Despise (post 22)

What do you think the giant machine was? Who was in it? Make a prediction.

  1. a plane
  2. Special Circumstances

Tally is being spied on by Special Circumstances.

The Worst Mistake (post 21)

Have you ever made yourself do something that you didn't want to do because you knew you had to?

I probobly have, but it's not exciting enough for me to remember.

my prediction: what will happen next:

Tally is in trouble.

Spagbol (post 20)

Invent a dried food you would take with you on your journey if you were Tally. What would it be? How would you make it?

I would bring beef jerky, because that is the best snack when you're camping. I would also bring fruit, or find fruit with insolated cups that make smoothies because having to be on the go, like Tally in the book, you would need your vitamins.

A list of things I would miss if i was forced to go on a journey:
  • my family
  • my soft bed
  • my dog and cat
  • my friends
  • home-cooked meals
  • a warm place to stay
  • MY PHONE, LAPTOP, & IPOD
  • clean clothes
  • a toilet

Leaving (post 19)

Why do you think Tally ultimately decides to figure out wher Shay is?

Because Peris reminds her that she made a promise to him not to do anything stupid, and she really wants to be pretty.

Infiltrator (post 18)

chronological order of important events that happened in the chapter:

  1. she was taken to Special Circumstances
  2. she answered questions
  3. Dr. Cable demanded Tally to find Shay
  4. if she didn't she would be ugly-for-life

Peris (post 17)

Why do you think Peris comes back?

I think he came back because he wanted to know why Tally wasn't pretty yet.

textual evidence:
"This whole trick where you haven't turned pretty yet. Mysterious."

Ugly for Life (post 16)

"Everywhere she went, eyes looked away. But it was the most visible she'd ever felt."

my response:
Tally feels even though everyone isn't looking at her she is actually quite visible to everyone in her dorm, and she isn't used to anyone paying attention to her.

Special Circumstances (post 15)

Summarize the chapter in chronological order:

  1. The man takes Tally to this "place"
  2. He leads her to a woman
  3. She asks Tally questions about Shay
  4. Also about Shay's friends
  5. Tally is told she can't turn pretty until she reveals Shay's secret

My prediction on what will happen next:

Tally will keep Shay's secret for a while, but then I think she'll start to suffer knowing she's giving up everything she is just to keep Shay from being found. I think she knows Shay is doing the wrong thing she just doesn't want to admit it because Shay is her best friend.

Characterization of Dr. Cable:

  • scary
  • wierd
  • demanding
  • quiet
  • hardworker
  • mean

Operation (post14)

Summarize the chapter highlighting the important events in cronological order. Predict what will happen next.

  1. Tally is about to leave her dorm for the most important event in her life
  2. She leaves in a hovercar
  3. She arrives at the hospital and waits
  4. She waits for hours
  5. Then a doctor comes out and reports to her there is problem in the operation

I think next Tally will just have to adjust a few things and then get her operation.

Fight (post 13)

Two fights were presented in this chapter. Compare and contrast both of them. List their similarities and differences. Why did each fight take place? What was the outcome of each one?

The first fight:
  • silly
  • a joke
  • not real
  • to scare the new uglies at the dorm
  • funny

The second fight:

  • real
  • not a joke
  • between Tally and Shay
  • discussed turning pretty
  • Tally upset
  • Shay didn't want to turn pretty
  • Tally did though

The first fight took place because the girls only had a few more weeks before turning pretty, so they wanted to play some jokes. The second fight took place because the girls were arguing about becoming pretty, and Shay didn't want to turn pretty, but Tally did.

The outcome of the first fight was funny, the girls didn't get caught. The outcome of the second fight wasn't good, the girls didn't talk for a while.

Waiting for David (post12)

What does the following quote from the chapter tell you about the city?
"That was one thing about being outside the city: It masde all that nature stuff they thought in school seem a lot more useful. she remembered now how rainwater fell on the mountains and soacked into the ground....."

The town is fake and everything is man-made.

The Rusty Ruins (post 11)

  1. They hoverboard to Rusty Ruins.
  2. On the way they se beautiful scenery.
  3. Tally notices the Rusty Ruins is destroyed.
  4. They ride the roller coaster; Tally fell off and got really scared.
  5. Shay wants Tally to meet someone.

similies in the chapter:

pg 62 "Every building sported jagged spurs of metal sticking from its broken walls, like bones jutting from a long-dead animal."

pg 64 "On the roller coaster, hoverboarding really was like being a bird."

Rapids (post 10)

In this chapter Tally says, "I kind of like being fooled about some things." Do you agree with Tally, or would you rather know the reality behind everything? Why?

I do agree with Tally, because everything is better when it's a surprise.

Pretty Boring (post 9)

Describe the Rusty Ruins. What are they? What happened during this time period?

The Rusty Ruins is an old town past Uglyville. It's destroyed and cars are blown up. Tally describes hearing screams, and people being trapped as the town burnt. During the time period of the Rusty Ruins, when people actually lived there, it was kind of the world we live in now. Buildings that had to be held up by poles, that didn't hover, like the ones in Uglyville.

Define peer pressure. Think of a time when it happened to you or someone you know and explain the situation in a paragraph.

Peer pressure-when you're forced to do somethingyou don't want to do because of pressure from friends. I've never really had peer pressure happen to me. I know for sure I've had good peer pressure, like my friends and family cheering me on in whatever I do.

Facing the Future (post 8)

Reflect on the following quotes from the chapter, what does each mean to you?

"Making ourselves feel ugly is not fun."...."This whole game is just designed to make us hate ourselves."

Shay is kind of saying the game makes her feel uglier than what she alreaady is.

"Everyone judged everyone else based on their appearance. People who were taller got better jobs...people killed one another over stuff like having different skin color." (Referring to when everyone was ugly)

This means people killed or judged just because they weren't equal in appearance.

"It's the only way to make people equal. " (becoming pretty)

She's trying to say making everyone pretty would make everything better. So that no one would have to judge anyone else.

Wipeout (post 7)

Think of another, book, movie or comic (exc) in which people use hover boards. How are they used? If possible post a video of this.

Why do you think the new pretties don't come back to Uglyville to visit? Describe their physical & mental transformations into new pretties?

I think new pretties don't go and visit in Uglyville because they become different and why would they want to go back to such a boring town?
New pretties physical and mental transformations into new pretties consist of:

physical:

  • new skin
  • plastic cheek bones
  • full lips
  • new eyes

mental:

  • I'm better.
  • I'm prettier.
  • Why should I have to go back?
